East Africa
Cargo to and from Tanzania
A market and a gateway at the same time, served from two coasts.
Tanzania is unusual in this region because it is both a destination and a door. Dar es Salaam is the head of the Central Corridor and feeds Zambia, Malawi, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and the eastern DRC, which means a container landing there is as likely to be leaving the country as staying in it.
The northern regions complicate the picture usefully. Arusha and Moshi sit far closer to Mombasa than to their own principal port, and cargo for them often clears through Kenya and crosses at Namanga or Holili rather than travelling up from the coast. Choosing the gateway is a routing decision worth making deliberately, and it is one of the more common questions we get asked.

How cargo reaches Tanzania

Northern Tanzania, via Kenya
- Port of Mombasa
- Namanga or Holili border

We don’t publish transit times against a route. Distance and corridor are geography; what a specific container takes depends on the border, the season and the vessel. Ask us and we’ll commit to a timing against your actual shipment.
